Animal welfare issues in destination countries

On arrival, animals are subject to various welfare risks. In overseas destinations with different climates, animals must adjust to new and sometimes extreme temperatures, especially in the case of sheep transported from Australia to the Middle East. They generally endure long waiting periods before disembarking ships and being loaded onto trucks, where rough handling can cause distress and injury. During truck journeys to feedlots and/or slaughterhouses, they are usually denied access to food or water which can lead to dehydration and exhaustion. Once at the slaughterhouse, they may be subject to a range of different slaughter methods, including unskilled and sometimes illegal methods which cause pain and suffering.

Dec 2019 We're fighting the drought - alot of animals need transporting out of paddocks with nothing to eat

Storms & flooding

February 2, 2013
Unbelievably, we have gone from a really bad drought to a period of severe storms/flood in a matter of weeks.  We were buying water for rescued farmyard animals last week to now having flooding problems for many of our carers & our Shelter. What is that Aussie poem....''from droughts to flooding rains, The Wide Brown Land for me..."?  A big thankyou to Velma from  www.velmaspetsastherapy.com.au who organised a team of volunteers on short notice to be on standby all through the night of the severe weather warning to save all the animals in care who were in danger of being flooded out. It was a very long night!!! And it was a very hard night with creeks rising and wind & rain relentless but we were lucky not to loose any animal enclosures and only minimal damage from falling branches to infrastructure (sheds & road). Thanks again to all those from VPAT it was great to know you were there !

Summer, Drought, Xmas Holidays

February 2, 2013

It has been a terrible summer with record heatwave conditions. Critterrescue volunteers have taken too many abandoned & neglected pets into care.  The drought has meant alot of local people just cant feed their farmyard animals and the Xmas holiday period has meant alot of people have just abandoned their pet dog/cat/guinea pigs/birds etc to go away on holidays. It has been a really busy period for us. Hey everyone help us by reminding people not to take on a pet unless they can provide for t...
